About Virgin Islands Oncology and Hematology
In January 2006, Dr. Erole Hobdy opened the doors of Virgin Islands Oncology and Hematology on the second floor of the VI Medical Foundation Building directly behind the hospital. Dr. Hobdy, a native of Jamaica, had been living on the island for two years and was impressed by the number of people who were being diagnosed with cancer and who were leaving the island for cancer care. With her medical degree and training from Columbia University in New York and her cancer training from Yale Cancer Center, Dr. Hobdy felt that she could and should do her part in providing an option for patients to receive cancer care locally in the Virgin Islands. Dr. Hobdy’s belief was, and still is, that people living in the Caribbean should feel confident and comfortable that they can get good care at home.
The office started with Dr. Hobdy and one employee, her receptionist Eilet Smith. Since that time the St. Thomas office staff has grown to a total of 6 employees which include two Oncology certified nurses who administer chemotherapy in the office, Tashema Clarke, native of St. Thomas, Shalecia Williams, receptionist, Allison Joyner, a phlebotomist who does lab work in the office and Eilet Smith who moved from receptionist to office manager and a second oncologist/hematologist, Dr. Joseph Kaplan who recently joined the practice full-time.
Two years after the St. Thomas office opened, the practice expanded to the island of St. Croix. Dr. Hobdy and her nurses would fly to St. Croix once a week to treat patients. Many patients who were getting treated in the States returned to St. Croix once they realized this service was available. There were many days when there would be so many patients to see and so little time to see and treat everyone in one day. Eventually in 2010, Virgin Islands Oncology & Hematology moved from one day a week to a full –time practice in St. Croix, the first in that island’s history. This office is staffed with a full-time oncologist/hematologist, Dr. Preston H. Dalglish, Jr who relocated to St. Croix with his wife Terry in September 2010 as well as oncology nurse, Jolene Lake, receptionist Brian Christian and phlebotomist Magdalena Nieves who are all natives of St. Croix. We now have a brand new state of the art office located at 48 Castle Coakley in St. Croix.
The vision and mission of Virgin Islands Oncology & Hematology is to provide access to unparalleled high quality care to the people of the Virgin Islands and to raise the awareness of cancer in our community and to the rest of the Caribbean.
